Layer Basics

"The first rule to tinkering is to save all the parts." Paul Erlich

Creating New Layer: (see Layer Activity 1)
From the Menu:>Layers>Layer or click layer icon at the bottom of layer palette.
Duplicating a layer: (see Layer Activity 1)
3 Ways to duplicate a layer:
1) by using the "Layers" menu Menu:>Layers>Duplicate
2) from
the Layers Palette click and select option from menu
3) by dragging a layer to the "new layer" icon at the bottom of the Palette
Making Active:
  - click on layer name to make layer active
- only the active layer is effected
Making Visible:
  - clicking "eye" icon toggles layer "on" or "off" (visible or invisible)
Prioritizing:
  - moving layer up and down the stack determines which layer is "in front" or "behind" the other.
- Layers should be thought of as a stack of images viewed through from top to bottom.
Naming:
  - double clicking the layer name allows for renaming the layer
Background Layer:
-The "Background" layer is unique. It can not me moved and is always at the bottom of the stack. No layer can be placed below (behind) the "Background" layer.
- Double clicking the "Background" layer allows it to be renamed (PS selects a default of "Layer 0". Once it is renamed, it follows all the rules of a normal layer and can be placed anywhere in the stack.
Linking:
  - clicking just to the right of the layer "eye" icon will link the layers to each other.
- Moving any "linked" layer with the will move all "linked" layers.
- Linked Layers have other benefits like: transforming, merging, aligning, etc.
