A 12 Step Program to Understanding Digital Color Management
1
In the digital image workflow, there are many "Color Spaces".
2
Each "color space" has a finite color range called "Gamut".
3
A "color space" can be defined by an [ICC] "Profile".
4
A "Tagged" file is a file with an "embedded profile".
5
You can move from one color space to another by either "Converting" or "Assigning" "profiles".
6
When you move between color spaces, colors that can not be reproduced are "Out of Gamut".
7
When colors are "out of gamut", the new colors chosen are determined by the processing "Intent".
8
The "intent" when processing photos should be either "Perceptual" or "Relative".
9
There are "profiles" for capturing devices, processing software and output devices.
10
When capturing, we "Assign" the "profile" of the input device.
11
When processing, we use a "working color space" and viewing "profile" of the monitor device.
12
When outputting, "Convert" to the "profile" of the output device.
